Health & Beauty (9th Jul – 22nd Jul) | Tips to achieve Healthy and Natural Hair

Proper hair care leads to a healthier and better looking hair. Bad hair care tactics can lead to breakage, fly aways, frizzies, split ends, dull hair, and early hair loss. Following a few simple guidelines and hair care techniques can help you maintain the health and growth of your hair.

Basic tips for healthy and beautiful looking hair:

  • A well balanced diet rich in proteins, silica, calcium and iron helps in the proper growth of hair and prevents hair loss. Since hair is composed mostly of protein, your hair will most likely respond well to the addition of high protein foods such as meats, eggs, cheese, seeds and nuts. These protein-rich foods can help reinforce the hair follicles and prevents the hair from falling out. Green, leafy vegetables, especially sea vegetables, are good mineral sources. Raw oats provide silica. Eat foods that are rich in vitamin A, B, C, E and K. Add iron and minerals in the natural form in your diet.
  • The hair type determines your hair cleansing routine. Try to use a mild shampoo to cleanse your hair and use a conditioner to keep the hair manageable. The water you use to wash your hair should neither be too hot, or too cold. Shower with warm water, hot water can dry or irritate the scalp.
  • Avoid brushing wet hair since hair is most fragile when it is wet or else it can cause breakage of hair easily. Finger-dry, or use a wide-toothed comb instead of a brush to gently remove the knots. Even when hair is dry always comb before brushing.
  • Air-dry your hair whenever possible. Restrict blow-drying your hair. Blow-drying is harsh on hair as it robs the hair of moisture and the strong heat tends to damage the hair. Hold hair dryer away from your hair. Apply air from the hair dryer down hair shaft and not directly into the roots and keep it moving.
  • Avoid the use of coloring- dyes. Use mehndi (henna) instead as a conditioner and coloring agent.
  • When swimming wear a cap to protect your hair from the chlorinated water. Before going out to the beach or pool, comb conditioner through the hair. This helps to protect hair from the sun, chlorine, salt water, and from the sun's heat, and serves as a deep conditioning treatment. Wear a hat, cap or scarf to protect hair from over-exposure to the sun, salt or chlorinated water, wind and air pollution.
  • Massaging your scalp stimulates blood circulation to the hair follicles. Often it helps to prevent and fight avoidable hair loss, and re-establish the natural development of healthy hair. In addition to all this, it is extremely relaxing, calming, and helps relieve headaches and migraines.
  • Learn to relax as building up of stress can lead to hair loss. Drink 8 to 10 glasses (8 ounce serving) of water a day to keep your hair well hydrated. A natural "miracle" that supports hair vitamin consumption is surprisingly water. Water is undoubtedly essential for proper hair growth.
